Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period) is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesha Chaturthi or Vinayak chaturthi usually falls between August and September. Son of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesh the elephant-headed, remover of obstacles is worshipped as the god of beginnings and wisdom. Ganesha is known as the God of success and thus, worshiped before making any new beginning. Being the lord of knowledge, wisdom, education, and wealth, Ganesha is counted among the five prime Hindu Gods, whose idolism is equivalent to Panchayatana Puja. The festival Ganesha Utsav lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period), also known as Ganesh Visarjan day.

On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh in water body after a gala street procession.

It is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. Hindus install the clay images of Ganesha in their homes. It is believed that Ganesha bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees during this festival. The idol is worshiped in every morning and evening until the "departure". The worship involves various offerings to the idol including flowers and bunch of tender grass shoots called Durva and modak.  As per the tradition of their respective families, the domestic celebrations come to an end after 1,3,5,7 or 11 days when the statue is taken in a procession to river or the sea for immersion.

 Ganesh Puja is preferred during Madhyahna as it is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Madhyahna Kala. Madhyahna Kala is equivalent to midday according to Hindu division of the day.

It is believed that one should not sight the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. Sighting the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi creates Mithya Dosham or Mithya Kalank (कलंक) which means false accusation of stealing something. Depending on start and end time of Chaturthi Tithi, sighting of the moon might be prohibited for two consecutive days. According to DrikPanchang.com rules, Moon should not be sighted while Chaturthi Tithi is prevailing. Further, Moon risen during Chaturthi should not be sighted even if Chaturthi Tithi gets over before moonset.
