Planetary Friendships

PANCHADHA MAITRI/FIVE-FOLD REALTIONSHIP (COMPOUNDED FRIENDSHIP): PLANETARY FRIENDSHIP/ENMITY
Strength of a Planet depends upon his position and relationship with other planets.
Planets are strong in signs of their exaltation, Mool Trikona, own sign, great friends or friends (shubh Panchak). Planets are neutral in strength in neutral signs. They are weak in the signs of their enemies or great enemies, and more so in their fall (debilitation).
When two planets influence each other through some relationship then their impact on the native depends upon the quality of that relationship. The said planets may  share the relation of a Fast Friend (atimitra), Friend (mitra), Neutral (sama), Inimical (shatru)or Bitter Enemy (ati shatru) , which is ascertain by assessing their Naisargik(natural) and Takalik(temporal) maitree. This relationship is called Panchdha Maitree. Based on this,
RELATIONSHIP is of four types
(1) Exchange (Parivartana) Mutual sign ownership relation (when two planets are in signs owned by each other it is the most powerful relation),
(2) Drishti or Aspect by the sign lord  it is one-way relation when one planet is posited in the sign owned by another and is also aspected significantly, if the aspect is near-total then it is also a very powerful relation;
(3) Posited in the same Sign: when two planets are posited in same house, it is also a powerful relation ; and
(4) Mutual Aspect when two planets mutually aspects each other  if mutual aspects are almost total then it is also a very powerful relation, but if influences from other planets are absent then even 25% mutual aspect relation will become significant.

Planetary Relationships falls in two groups: permanent (Naisargika) & temporal

"permanent" relationships depend upon the natural status of the planets.

Temporal or temporary relationships depends upon the position of planets in an individual horoscope.

Natural friendship or natural enmity etc. of planets show the main results. And a third type of relationship also exists that is of Neutral (Sam), Planets in this group are neither friends nor enemies but enjoy equal status.

When we judge the friendship of Sun, it shows the attitude of Sun towards other planets, irrespective of the attitudes of those planets towards Sun.
Naisargika Friendships must never be used directly for chart analysis  its sole use is to compute Panchadhā-Maitree, the latter is displayed in softwares and is to be used for chart analysis. Hence, if Moon is not inimical to any planet in its Naisargika friendships, it only implies that Moon will never be bitter enemy of any planet in Panchadhā Maitree Scheme, but Moon will be inimical to another planet in Panchadhā Maitree if it is inimical in Tātkālika and neutral in Naisargika.

Natural Friendship(Naisargika)
(Shaloka 55,Chapter 3,BPHS)
From the mool-trikona sign of any planet, lords of the 4th, 2nd, 12th, 5th, 9th, 8th, and the lord of the exaltation sign are friendly to the planet [who owns the Mool Trkona]. Lords of the other houses are enemies. Lords who own both are neutral.

Lords of other rashis are its enemies (Shatru). If a Graha becomes Mitra & Shatru on account of owing two rashis then it is termed as neutral (Sam) Graha.

Applicable Rules:

Satyacharya’s rule: The lords of the signs in 2, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 12 from the moola Trikona sign of a planet are its Mitra (friends).

Lords of other rashis (viz. the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th position lords) are its natural Shatru (enemies).

If a planet becomes a friend and an enemy on account of owning 2 rashis, then it is a Sama (neutral planet).

This is a permanent relationship and is not influenced by position of planets in the zodiac. Due to their inherent nature, the planets are friendly with certain planets and inimical to others. The rays of planets will be intensified by the rays of one declared as its friend and counteracted by those of a planet declared as enemy.

When we talk of the rule that Lords of 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th & 12th H from the Mool of the Planet are Natural Friends; One thing to remember is that the exaltation sign’s lord of a planet is always its friend even if it owns 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th from its mooltrikona sign.

Naisargika Friendships must never be used directly for chart analysis its sole use is to compute Panchadhā-Maitree. Hence, if Moon is not inimical to any planet in its Naisargika friendships, it only implies that Moon will never be bitter enemy of any planet in Panchadhā-Maitree Scheme, but Moon will be inimical to another planet in Panchadhā-Maitree if it is inimical in Tātkālika and neutral in Naisargika

Temporary Friendship(Tatkalika):
(Shaloka 56,Chapter 3,BPHS)
The planets posited in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, or the 12th from any planet, becomes a mutual friend. There is enmity otherwise. In other words Planets in 10, 11, 12, 2, 3, 4 positions from any other become its temporary friends. Those in the remaining sign become temporary enemies.

Compound Relationship- Panchadhā Maitree:
(Shaloka 57,Chapter 3,BPHS)
Panchdha Maitree is derived by combining Parmanent Friendship and Temporal friendship  Should two Planets be Naturally and Temporarily friendly, they become extremely friendly. Friendship on one count and neutrality on another count make them friendly. Enmity on one count combined with affinity on the other turns into equality. Enmity and neutralship cause only enmity. Should there be enmity in both manners, extreme enmity is obtained.

।(Satyāchārya)
Lords of 2nd, uchcha (exaltation), 8th, 4th, 12th, 5th and 9th houses from Moola-trikona (trine) of a planet are (Naisargika or natural) friends of that planet, lords of other houses from Moola-trikona are enemies, and lords of both are neutral.
Thus, lords of 2-12, 5-9, 4-8 houses from Moola-trikona are natural friends of a planet

Moolatrikona  Signs for Planets:

Let’s apply this rule and establish friendship table for Sun.
Planetary Friendship for Sun

Mool Trikona Sign for Sun
   Leo
4L from MT
 Mars(Scorpio/Vrishchika)
2L from MT
Mercury(Virgo/Kanya)
12L from MT
Moon (Cancer/Kark)
5L from MT
Jupiter(Sagittarius/Dhanu)
9L from MT
 Mars (Aries/Mesha)
8L from MT
Jupiter (Pisces/Meena)
Exaltation Sign
 Mars (Aries/Mesha)
So Sun is Friend to
Mars-Jupiter-Moon
Sun's Mool-Trikona lies in Leo. From there 4-2-12, 5-9 & 8 houses are friendly signs, This leaves 3-6-7-10-11 as inimical signs.
Lords of these signs make Moon, Mars and Jupiter the natural friends of Sun.
Enemy signs have Venus as lord of Taurus and Libra and Saturn as lord of Capricorn /Makara-Aquarius/Kumbha.
Mercury is neutral to Sun because Mercury as lord of Kanyā is friendly to Sun and Mithuna is inimical to Sun.
Exaltation Sign of Sun Mesha (Aries) is 9th from its Mool-Trikona, which is friendly. Hence, it makes no difference in friendships.
The table gives the relation of all planets
Let’s apply this rule.

In the above table Venus (Taurus) Lord of exaltation sign of Moon but Venus (Libra) is enemy as 6L from MT of Moon. So here, Venus will act as neutral to Moon. Same way Mars Saturn and Jupiter will act as Neutral to Mercury.
Saturn is neutral to Mars, As Capricorn and Aquarius in 10th and 11th   houses from Aries, which is Mool-Trikona of Mars. Hence, Saturn should be a natural enemy of Mars. However, Mars Exalts in Capricorn, hence Capricorn becomes friendly to Mars and only Aquarius remains enemy. As a result, Saturn must be neutral to Mars.
Jupiter's signs Sagittarius and Pisces are in 3rd and 6th houses from the Mool-Trikona of Venus in Libra. Hence, Jupiter ought to be inimical to Venus. However, Pisces is exaltation for Venus, hence friendly. Therefore, Jupiter must be neutral to Venus.

Natural Friendships and Enmities of Nodes :
BPHS says that Mool-Trikona for Rāhu's lies in Gemini. Hence, Rāhu's friendly signs should be Cancer-Virgo-Libra-Capricorn-Aquarius-Taurus and enemy signs should be Leo-Scorpio-Sagittarius-Pisces-Aries. Rāhu's exaltation Taurus is 12th from its Moola-trikona and therefore already friendly; hence, it calls for no change. As a result, we get Moon-Venus-Saturn as Natural Friends of Rāhu, Sun-Mars-Jupiter as Natural Enemies of Rāhu, and Mercury as neutral.
English translator of BPHS R. Santhanam writes: "Rahu : Sun, Moon and Mars are his enemies. Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are his friends. Mercury is his neutral." In his statement, interchange Jupiter with Moon and it will be correct as per the Shaloka.
BPHS says that Mool-Trikona for Ketu's lies in Sagittarius. Hence, Ketu's friendly signs should be Capricorn-Pisces-Aries-Leo-Cancer-Scorpio signs  and enemy signs should be Aquarius-Taurus-Gemini-Virgo-Libra. Ketu's exaltation Scorpio is 12th from its Mool-Trikona and therefore already friendly; hence it calls for no change. As a result, we get Sun-Moon-Mars as natural friends of Ketu, Mercury-Venus as natural enemies of Ketu, and Jupiter-Saturn as neutral.
Applying the same rule, natural friendships of nodes with other planets are as follows :
Sun:  Rahu = enemy;   Ketu = friend.

Moon: Rahu = enemy; Ketu = enemy.

Mars:  Rahu = enemy;   Ketu = friend.

Mercury: Rahu = enemy;   Ketu = enemy.

Jupiter: Rahu = enemy;   Ketu = friend.

Venus: Rahu = friend;    Ketu = friend.

Saturn: Rahu = enemy;   Ketu = enemy.
For these computations about the nodes,Exaltation Sign, Mool-Trikona and ownership of both nodes as mentioned in Dashā-phalādhyāya of BPHS has been used here

IMPORTANT The consolidated table has venus and saturn friends, enemies and neutral planets swaped.

In the consolidated table,
1. Information on Rahu and Ketu relationships is missing
2. Venus row doesn't mention Saturn.
3. All the planet rows are missing information on Rahu and Ketu.
It would be super helpful if you can update this.

The Natural Friendship and Enemies of Nodes section has contradictions.
Especially Ketu and Venus are written as natural enemies while in the below table Venus is shown as friends with Ketu. There is something either wrong or the interpretation should be clear enough to understand what is BPHS sloka saying. Please can you update this? Thanks.
