There are
two forms of bloodstone – the plasma and
heliotrope. Heliotrope is transparent and has red in it. Plasma is deep green,
opaque with little or no red in it. A good quality bloodstone comes with solid
dark green color with visible veins of red.
The red
inclusions are supposed to resemble spots of blood; hence the name bloodstone".
The color green in bloodstone is due to the presence of iron and chlorite and
red color is due to hematite. Bloodstone is a mixture of quartz with
uncrystallized opal quartz.
